A local massage girl is caught sleeping in the Jiuxianqiao District in Beijing, China. Jiuxianqiao District is one of the older neighborhoods in the city, and Forth Street is particularly impoverished. Old Soviet style buildings built in the 1950s and 1960s for workers that took part in the creation of Beijing have now become run down urban slums. These urban slums have spawned crime and prostitution to a level that Beijing municipal government no longer feels acceptable; yet no firm plans for renovation or demolition have been decided upon. With large migration from the countryside in to urban areas China has not had the difficulty with rural slums that other countries in Asia and Africa have dealt with. In fact, China?s urban slums exist closer to the city centers, where migrants can find work. The Jiuxianqiao district is an example of the type of urban slum that exists in China.
