Looking out at a pile of rubble from where old buildings have been knocked down outside the city walls; outside the walls the city is a growing and modern metropolis. In the background is ancient wall surrounding the town of Pingyao in central China's Shanxi province. Pingyao has a history of being one of the first financial centers in China and it was quick to prosper in the Qing Dynasty. Today it is well known for its 12m high city walls, its 72 watchtowers and its 4m wide moat which all still exist in much of their original form.
